| What's wheel balancing? |
| When a wheel is unbalanced, there is an unequal distribution
of weight around the rim of the wheel and tire assembly. The
tire may seem round and true when rotated slowly, but on the
road centrifugal force acts on the heaviest part of the tire,
making it wobble or vibrate (like an out-of-balance ceiling
fan). This can cause flat spots on the tire treads and is damaging
to ball joints, bearings, steering, and shock absorbers. With
special equipment, technicians can measure a tire and wheel
assembly, then add special wheel weights to restore balance.
Hitting potholes and normal vehicle wear-and-tear can cause
unbalanced wheels. Uneven tire wear can indicate unbalanced
wheels, so it's wise to check and rotate your vehicle's tires
regularly. |

| Wheel balancing |
Wheels that are not balanced or are out of balance generally produce a vibration that is uncomfortable to drive in and results in premature wearing of suspension and steering components, rotating parts and tyres.
Correctly balanced wheels help to eliminate vibration and avoid premature wear caused by an imbalance in the rotating wheel and tyre assembly.
The first sign that your wheels may be out of balance is when your steering wheel starts to wobble above a certain speed. The light weight of modern cars means that they don't dampen down the vibrations caused by spinning wheels in the way that older, heavier vehicles could.
A driver may not always sense an imbalance at the steering wheel. It could be present with but dampened by the vehicle weight. This is why balancing is equally important for both front and rear wheels.

Wheel weight—
Wheel weights
are used to balance the tires. Wheel weights are made
of soft lead and come in different sizes depending on the amount
of weight the tire needs to balance. A computerized wheel balancer
can determine where the weights need to be placed on the wheel
and how much weight is needed.
Just a small mount of weight can make a huge difference in
ride performance. A tire that is out of balance will shimmy
and vibrate and this vibration can be felt inside the car
and in the steering wheel. If a vibration is felt at one speed
but not at another it is probably due to an out of balance
problem. |
